Story of the Month- March 2012

2 Mar

It was a windy night in early spring. Tabitha noticed with some nostalgia the fact that the wind always seemed to pick up strongly as the seasons changed. It was almost as if the Earth itself was protesting. No matter. She had to keep her head in the game, so she shook the distraction of the wind from her mind and lined up her shot.

The room was smoky. Weird, because who smokes anymore? Still, it didn’t distract her. She was poised to take the shot. She lined her stick up and fired it at the ball. The white cue sailed across the green of the table and, ever so gracefully, knocked the 8-ball into the corner pocket, like it had eyes. Those around her clapped and cheered.

“Pay up,” she said, the cliché intentionally meant for its sting. Amidst some groans, she collected her winnings. From behind the bar, Chuck called to her.

“Hey Tabitha, you got a visitor up front.”
